St Matthew

The church sits on a quiet corner in Wisbech, unremarkable from the street but worth a proper look inside. St Matthew's is a Victorian rebuild - the original medieval structure gave way to this solid brick affair in the 1880s, which means the interior has that particular blend of high ceilings and earnest craftsmanship you get from that era. The stained glass catches light properly, and there's genuine peace in here, the kind you don't find in many places anymore.

It's really a stop-off rather than a destination in itself. If you're cycling around the Fens or exploring Wisbech's Georgian architecture, you'll pass it. History types and anyone interested in Victorian church design will spend twenty minutes contentedly looking at details. Kids will be bored senseless after five, unless you're the sort of family that actually engages with old buildings.

The main appeal is using it as part of a broader wander through town. Wisbech itself has proper character - you can spend a good afternoon nosing around the river, looking at period properties, grabbing coffee. If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Laurel Park Campsite or The Lawns over in Outwell are both excellent - St Matthew's works as a five-minute detour when you're already in town.

Frequent Sunday services if you're looking for that. Otherwise, best to check locally before turning up, as opening times aren't advertised. Don't make a special journey. Do visit if you're in the area.
