St Mary's & St John's Church

The church sits right in the heart of Hawes, a solid stone building that's been watching over the town since medieval times. Step inside and you're met with that particular smell - old wood, stone, and something indefinably peaceful. The interior is genuinely lovely, with some decent stained glass and the kind of quiet that makes you want to whisper even though there's no one around to disturb.

It's dedicated to both St Mary and St John, which is fairly unusual, and there's enough architectural detail here to keep history enthusiasts occupied for a good twenty minutes or so. The churchyard itself is worth a wander if you've got time - proper atmospheric spot with old gravestones and views across Wensleydale.

This works best if you're already spending time in Hawes itself rather than making a special trip. Walk down from the high street, spend ten or fifteen minutes inside if it's open, then carry on with exploring the town's cheese factory or independent shops. If you're camped at Hawes Caravan and Motorhome Club or Cherish Glamping just down the road, it's a five-minute stroll and a decent rainy-day option when the weather turns. Kids won't be thrilled for long, but it's free and accessible, so there's no harm popping in if you're passing. The real appeal is more about soaking up the sense of place in this little market town than seeing anything particularly spectacular.
