St Mary's RC Church

The red sandstone facade of St Mary's catches you as you walk through Ballymena's town centre - proper striking against the grey Northern Irish sky. This is a working Roman Catholic church, and stepping inside reveals high Victorian Gothic architecture that feels genuinely grand for a town this size. The interior soars upward with pointed arches and stained glass that actually rewards a close look rather than the cursory glance most visitors give it.

It's not a tourist attraction in the conventional sense - there's no gift shop, no admission fee, no recorded commentary. You're visiting an active place of worship, which means timing matters. Come outside service hours and you'll likely find the doors open, but respect that this is someone's church, not a museum. The craftsmanship is what holds your attention: the wooden carvings, the altar details, the way light filters through the windows at different times of day. History buffs will appreciate the Victorian engineering; architecture types should definitely make the detour.
