St Mary's Church, Yatton

The tower of St Mary's Church rises above Yatton village like a proper medieval sentinel, visible for miles across the Somerset levels. It's a 15th-century parish church with all the character you'd expect - soaring perpendicular windows, intricate stonework, and that particular smell of old stone and furniture polish that takes you straight back centuries.

Inside, the space feels generous and light. The roof timbers are worth a look if you crane your neck, and there's genuine medieval glass mixed in with later restoration work. The font is chunky and ancient, the sort of thing that's baptised generations. It's not a cathedral - there won't be queues or visitor centres - but that's rather the point. You get the place largely to yourself, which means you can actually sit and absorb the atmosphere without someone else's phone camera going off.

Family groups with older children will get more from a visit here than those with toddlers. The church rewards a bit of slow looking rather than rushing through. Walkers en route between Winscombe and other parts of the Mendips could easily incorporate this into a loop. Twenty minutes inside is realistic, longer if you're genuinely interested in medieval architecture.

It costs nothing to visit - just push the door and step in. Best time is mid-morning on a weekday when you'll have genuine peace. If you're based at The Batch Campsite or one of the other local sites within four miles, this makes an easy village wander, particularly if combined with a pub lunch. It's the sort of stop that rounds out a day rather than dominating it.
