St Mary's Church, STOTTESDON

The churchyard sits tucked away in Stottesdon village, and St Mary's itself is one of those proper medieval jobs that stops you mid-walk. Built in the 12th century, it's got the kind of solid Norman architecture you half expect to find in the Cotswolds rather than Shropshire - thick stone walls, a decent tower, and genuine character that's hard to fake.

Inside, there's real substance. The church holds some surprisingly good carved misericords - those little flip-up seats that monks and priests would perch on during long services - and you can spend a solid twenty minutes spotting the quirky medieval details if you're into that sort of thing. The stained glass is decent without being showstopping. It's the sort of place that rewards a slow look rather than a quick snap.

This works brilliantly as part of a Shropshire walking holiday, especially if you're based at Wheathill Touring Park or Lodge Coppice just down the road. The village itself is walkable, and the church makes a natural stopping point on a countryside ramble. Honestly, it's not a destination in itself - you won't spend more than 45 minutes here - but as a piece of the area's history it's well worth the detour from Kidderminster way.

Access appears straightforward, though it pays to check locally before visiting. Don't expect tea rooms or facilities, but do expect to actually feel like you've found something real.
