St Mary's Church, Sporle

The church sits quietly on the edge of Sporle village, just a few miles east of Swaffham, and it's the sort of place you'd miss entirely if you weren't looking for it. St Mary's is a solid Norman structure with a proper medieval bell tower - the kind of building that has been watching over the same patch of Norfolk for nearly a thousand years without making a fuss about it.

Inside, it's all vaulted ceilings, worn stone flags underfoot, and that particular smell that only very old churches have. There's a good amount of medieval woodwork and some decent monuments if you're into that sort of thing, but honestly, what makes it worth stopping for is the quiet. No crowds, no gift shop, just the space itself.

Walkers will appreciate how it sits in the landscape - the Peddars Way footpath runs through the area, so you can make this part of a proper ramble. History buffs will find enough medieval detail to keep them occupied for half an hour. Families with restless kids might find it a bit static, though the churchyard's worth a wander.

The village is small enough that you'll want to base yourself nearby - Breckland Meadows Caravan Park is only a couple of miles away and gives you decent access to this corner of Norfolk. Free to look round, open most daylight hours. Allow twenty minutes or so, longer if you're taking rubbings or sketching. It's the sort of visit that works best when you're not in a rush.
