St Marys Church, Northiam

The churchyard at St Mary's sits quietly on Northiam's main street, a proper Sussex parish church that's been standing since the 13th century. Inside, the space is light and surprisingly spacious - high ceilings, decent stained glass, and the sort of calm that makes you actually want to sit for a moment rather than just tick a box.

What catches people is the sheer age of it. The tower's medieval, the nave's been through various updates, and if you're into that sort of thing - and you should be - you'll spot evidence of different building periods just by looking up. The churchyard itself is atmospheric without being morbid, proper old graves mixed with newer ones, plenty of character.

It's genuinely worth a stop if you're exploring the High Weald around Robertsbridge, maybe 20 minutes max unless you're the type to read every plaque. Free to enter, no fuss. Walkers doing the area's network of footpaths will find it a natural pause point. Families with older kids won't find it boring - there's actual stuff to look at rather than just rows of pews.

The Original Hut Company's glamping just down the road in Northiam makes this a sensible part of a weekend loop. Combine it with walks through the surrounding countryside and a poke around Robertsbridge's antique shops, and you've got a proper morning sorted.
