St Mary's Church Middleton

The church sits on the edge of Middleton, a quiet Norfolk village east of King's Lynn, its squat tower visible from the road before you've even parked. Inside, St Mary's feels properly lived-in - the kind of place where the Sunday flowers are arranged by actual parishioners, not a professional, and the stone floor has been worn smooth by centuries of feet.

It's a 14th-century building with a decent amount of medieval detail if you know where to look. The chancel has some original timber work, and there's a screen that's been restored more times than I could count, each generation having a go at keeping it standing. The font is Norman, which means it's older than the building itself - those fonts got recycled when new churches went up.

Unless you're doing a proper church crawl through Norfolk - and there are dozens worth visiting in this corner of the county - you're probably not making a special trip here. But if you're staying at Norfolk Woods Resort and Spa just down the road, it's worth a 20-minute wander. Brings a bit of substance to a morning walk. Free to enter, naturally. Allow 15 minutes, maybe 20 if you're genuinely interested in the medieval period rather than just poking about.

The real appeal is the quiet. No gift shop, no visitor centre, just a church that's still doing its job after 600 years. That counts for something.
