St Mary's Church Long Sutton

The lead tower of St Mary's Church dominates the Long Sutton skyline from miles away - a proper medieval statement in the flat Cambridgeshire fens. Once you're inside, it's the sheer height of the interior that gets you. The church itself dates back to the 14th century, though it's been worked on plenty of times since. You'll spot some decent medieval work if you look up, and the usual run of Victorian additions doesn't spoil the original bones of the place.

It's free to visit and takes about half an hour to look around properly unless you're the type who reads every brass plaque. The chancel's worth lingering in, and the views from outside across the flatlands are genuinely atmospheric - especially on a grey afternoon when the light gets moody.
