Fred Hoyles Memorial Ground

There's a stretch of wetland just outside Spalding where you can actually see what these fenlands looked like before everything got drained and turned into farmland. Fred Hoyles Memorial Ground is a proper nature reserve - the kind of place where you'll spot waders and wildfowl if you time it right, and the light does something special across the water in late afternoon.

It's modest in scale, nothing like the grand reserves you'll find further east, but that's partly the appeal. You won't fight crowds here. The walking is straightforward - paths loop through the reserve, and depending on which way you go, you're looking at anywhere from twenty minutes to an hour. Binoculars matter. A lot. Bring them.

This works best for wildlife enthusiasts and keen birdwatchers rather than families with young kids - there's not much in the way of facilities or play areas, and a five-year-old will lose interest fast. Winter and spring are your best bets for spotting migrating birds. Summer gets quiet.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Laurel Park Campsite or The Lawns are both rated highly - this makes a low-key morning before you head elsewhere. It's free to access, and worth combining with a walk around Spalding's town centre or a proper day trip to the bigger attractions in the wider fens. Don't expect it to fill your day, but it's the sort of place that settles into your memory afterwards.
