St. Mary's Church

The red sandstone tower of St. Mary's Church rises above Castle Douglas like a Victorian sentinel, its Victorian Gothic Revival styling unmistakable from miles around. You won't need more than twenty minutes to look around properly, though if you're the type to sit quietly and take in the atmosphere, you could easily spend longer.

Histoy enthusiasts and architecture buffs will find it worth a detour, particularly if you're already exploring Castle Douglas town centre. Families with younger children might find it a bit too static - there's not much hands-on engagement - but older kids studying Victorian design or Scottish religious history will get plenty from it.
