St Mary's Abbey

Walking through the remains of St Mary's Abbey near Cirencester, you're confronted with the blunt reality of the Dissolution - crumbling stone walls that once housed Benedictine monks now sit quietly in open countryside. What survives are fragments: broken arches, foundation stones, the ghost of a cloister. It's not dramatic or intact like some abbeys, but that's partly what makes it compelling. You can actually see the layers of time exposed.

The site works best for people who enjoy piecing together history from what's left behind rather than those expecting a fully reconstructed showpiece. Families with older children who can engage with ruins will get something from it; younger ones might find twenty minutes enough. Walkers certainly benefit - it's accessible as a stop on a longer route through the Cotswolds, and Cirencester itself, just under a mile away, offers proper facilities and the excellent Corinium Museum if you want more Roman and medieval context.

The real value here is in combination with a park holiday. Stay at Cirencester Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, which sits almost on the doorstep, or push out to Hoburne Cotswold Holiday Park if you want something with more facilities. The abbey works as a half-hour detour during a day exploring Cirencester's town centre and amphitheatre. Free access, no formal opening hours - you can walk the grounds pretty much whenever. Nothing flashy, but genuine.
