St Mary the Virgin Fen Ditton

The church sits quietly on the edge of Fen Ditton, about three miles east of Cambridge city centre - easy enough to reach by bus or a pleasant cycle ride if you've got time. St Mary the Virgin is a proper medieval parish church, all flint and stone with that solid, no-nonsense look you get from Cambridgeshire's older buildings. Inside, the nave opens up in a way that catches you off guard, and there's genuine medieval work here - bits of 12th-century architecture if you know what to look for.

It's not a destination that'll take hours. Forty minutes, maybe an hour if you're genuinely into church architecture and want to study the details. Historically minded types will appreciate it. Families with restless kids? Probably not the main event. What works is combining it with walking the Cam Valley Way or exploring the wider area around Cambridge - it fits naturally into a longer route rather than being the reason you visit.

Access shouldn't be a problem if you're staying nearby, particularly if you're based at Chittering Park six miles away. The village itself is unremarkable in the best possible way - you're not fighting crowds, and you can usually just walk in. No entry fee as far as I could tell, though opening hours vary with whoever has the keys. Check locally before planning a special trip.
