St Mary the Virgin Church, Maldon

The tower of St Mary the Virgin dominates Maldon's high street - you can't miss it, really, rising above the Georgian shopfronts with that distinctive broach spire. Inside, it's a proper medieval church, all soaring arches and stone columns, with enough history packed in to keep any heritage enthusiast occupied for a solid hour. The Norman foundations are what get the serious history types excited, though the real draw is standing in the chancel and realising you're in a building where worship has happened for nearly a thousand years.

It's free to wander around during opening hours, and the staff are genuinely helpful if you want to know more about the monument brasses or the various restoration work that's kept the place standing. The acoustic is rather good too - if you catch a service or a concert, you'll understand why.

Families won't find it thrilling on its own, but it slots perfectly into a Maldon afternoon. The church sits right in town, so you can combine it with exploring the high street, grabbing lunch, and heading down to the waterfront to see the barges. If you're staying at Mill Beach Seaside Resort or Osea Leisure Park just down the road, popping in takes fifteen minutes max - well worth the short walk. History buffs should allow longer; everyone else, quarter of an hour and you're done. Go on a grey English afternoon and the light through the windows is absolutely lovely.
