St Mary the Virgin Church, Harby

The church sits quietly at the heart of Harby, a proper medieval survivor that most drivers heading into Nottingham completely miss. St Mary the Virgin is small, unpretentious, and genuinely rewarding if you care about that sort of thing.

What strikes you first is the 14th-century tower - solid, functional, built when the village actually mattered. Inside, it's intimate rather than grand. You get Norman doorways, some decent medieval stonework, and the sort of calm that only old churches manage. The chancel and nave are straightforward, nothing showy, which makes the occasional detail feel more precious. It's the kind of place where you spend twenty minutes properly looking instead of rushing through another guidebook tick-box.

History types will find this worthwhile. Families with young kids might struggle unless they're genuinely interested - there's not much to keep them occupied beyond a few minutes of poking about. Walkers doing a ramble round the village will find it worth a detour, especially if the weather's turned and you need to be inside something for a bit.

There's no admission charge that I'm aware of, and it's freely accessible during reasonable daylight hours. Allow fifteen to twenty minutes. If you're staying at Janson Fishery Caravan & Camping just down the road, it's a pleasant walk into the village rather than a full expedition. Harby itself won't eat your day, but the church is honest and uncluttered in a way that feels increasingly rare.
