St Mary the Virgin Church, Glemsford

The church sits quietly on Glemsford's high street, all flint and stone and weathered angles. St Mary the Virgin dates back to the 15th century, which means if you're into medieval Norfolk tracery and proper old timber roofs, you'll want to spend a good hour poking around inside. The tower is genuinely impressive - tall enough to dominate the village skyline, built when Glemsford had wool money and knew what to do with it.

What you get is the full medieval package: original features, some decent stained glass, and that particular smell of old stone that never quite leaves your clothes. It's the kind of place where you can sit in a pew and imagine what market day looked like five centuries ago. The churchyard's pleasant too, full of the kind of moss-covered gravestones that make for decent photography if you're into that.

History enthusiasts will find it worthwhile. Families with restless kids less so - there's not much to do once you've looked at the architecture. Allow 30-45 minutes unless you're sketching or reading every inscription.

Glemsford's just down the road from Sudbury, which makes this an easy detour if you're based at Lake View Lodges Suffolk or Cranfield Retreat & Glamping nearby. Neither location is far enough to make a special journey, but if you're already exploring the village or cycling round the area, it's worth a quick stop. Free entry, as you'd expect from a working parish church.
