St Mary the Virgin Church, Elham

The village church at Elham is one of those places you stumble upon while walking off the main roads around Canterbury, and it rewards the detour properly. St Mary the Virgin sits in a quiet churchyard just outside the village, a 13th-century building with a sturdy Norman tower that signals you're getting close before you see the gravestones.

Inside, it's got the real deal - original medieval features, some decent stained glass, and the kind of peaceful atmosphere that only old parish churches manage. The nave is reasonably proportioned without being grand, which somehow makes it feel more authentic than the cathedral-scale buildings. I spent a good twenty minutes looking at the details: the roof timbers, the font, the way light moves across the stone floor.

This isn't a destination in itself - you won't need more than half an hour, forty minutes max. But if you're staying at Hawthorne Trench Campsite just down the road, it's absolutely worth the short walk as part of an afternoon's ramble through the village. History types will appreciate the Norman architecture; families with older children who aren't bored by centuries-old stonework will find it interesting enough. The real appeal is stepping back from the bustle of Canterbury and spending time in a place where locals still worship, not somewhere that's been turned into a tourist attraction.

Free to enter as far as I could tell, and there's no fixed visiting hours - typical village church setup.
