Stowting castle

What remains of Stowting Castle today is more archaeology than monument - a low earthwork in the Kent countryside near Canterbury that takes a bit of imagination to piece together. This is an Iron Age hillfort, the sort of place that held defensive value two thousand years ago when the landscape looked entirely different. You won't find castle towers or stone walls. Instead you get ridges and ditches cut into the earth, the ghost of ancient fortifications that command decent views over the Weald.

It's the kind of spot that appeals most to serious history types and walkers tackling the Kent Downs - people who enjoy reading the land itself rather than following a guide. Kids under ten will likely lose interest within twenty minutes. Access appears to be on foot across farmland, so wear decent boots and check local landowner permissions before you go. There's no visitor infrastructure, which means no facilities and no opening hours to worry about.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Hawthorne Trench or Black Horse Farm are closest - you could fold Stowting into a longer walk rather than treat it as a destination in itself. The countryside around here works well for rambling, and being within reach of Canterbury means you can combine rural archaeology with medieval town exploration. Expect to spend an hour on site if you're genuinely interested in Iron Age settlement patterns, less if you just want the walk and the views. It's honest work rather than a day out.
