What makes St Mary worth stopping for is the interior. The chancel's decent, there's some decent stained glass if you catch the light right, and the general proportions of the building - that high nave - do make you pause. It's not going to keep you for hours, but half an hour wandering round with a guidebook if they have one gets you the full picture.

Chester's only a short drive away, so this works well as a quiet counterpoint to the busier attractions in town. If you're based at Manor Wood nearby, it's an easy detour on a country drive rather than something to specifically plan your day around. You'll want to check opening hours before you go - rural churches can be temperamental about when they're actually accessible to visitors. The admission is typically free, which is proper how it should be.

Historyfolk will get more out of it than casual sightseers, but there's something about these medieval spaces that works on everyone if you give it five minutes. Not a world-beater, but solid and worth the stop if you're in the area.
