St Mary the Virgin, Brading

The church sits right in the heart of Brading, a village just south of Ryde that most people drive through without stopping. St Mary the Virgin is worth that stop though - it's a proper medieval church with some genuinely impressive medieval wall paintings that survived centuries of whitewash and neglect.

Inside, the chancel walls are covered in 13th and 14th-century frescoes. They're faded now, sure, but you can still make out the detail - saints, biblical scenes, all rendered in ochre and red. The church itself is fairly compact and peaceful, the kind of place where you can spend twenty minutes properly looking rather than rushing through. The rest of the building spans several centuries of additions and alterations, so there's enough architectural interest to keep history types occupied without being overwhelming.

It's free to visit and usually open during daylight hours, though it's worth checking locally before you go since opening times aren't always posted online. Allow thirty minutes if you're genuinely interested in the wall paintings, less if you're just passing through. You won't need much more than that.

For a family holiday on the Isle of Wight, it works well as a gentle rainy-day alternative to beaches. Kids old enough to appreciate medieval things will find it interesting; younger ones might get bored quickly. If you're staying at Isle of Wight Coastal Park or White Cliff Bay, Brading is practically on your doorstep - worth a quick detour while you're in the area. Ryde itself is close enough for lunch if you need somewhere larger.
