The sandstone church dominates Stafford's skyline like it's been keeping watch for centuries - because it has. St Mary is proper medieval, with that unmistakable solidity that makes you understand why churches mattered so much. You walk in and the first thing that hits is the light pouring through stained glass, painting the nave in jewel tones.

The chancel and transepts are the real draw here. The stonework is exceptional - if you're bothered about architecture, you'll spend a good hour picking apart the details. There's something humbling about standing where worshippers have stood for 800 years, though you'll likely be alone or near-enough, which only adds to it.

This works best for anyone with even a passing interest in medieval churches or Staffordshire history. Casual tourists might find thirty minutes enough. The interior is accessible, though expect the usual church chill and worn flagstones.

If you're camping at Fledgling Farm just up the road, St Mary is an easy stroll into town and worth the detour. Stafford itself is manageable on foot - the church sits central enough that you can combine it with a walk around the town centre without the trip feeling tacked-on. No admission charge as far as we know, though donations are the done thing.
