St Mary Magdalene Church, Great Burstead

The church sits quietly on the edge of Great Burstead, a village that time has largely forgotten. St Mary Magdalene is a proper medieval affair - 15th century mostly, with that solid Essex brick construction that looks more fortress than house of God. The interior is surprisingly spacious, with a decent nave and some genuinely fine woodwork if you know where to look.

What strikes you walking in is the light. Big windows flood the place, which is unusual for a church of this age. There's good Tudor and later monuments dotted about - the kind of thing that appeals to anyone interested in local history or genealogy. Nothing jaw-dropping, but it rewards a slow wander.

You won't need long here - half an hour at most unless you're really into brass rubbings or tracing family trees. It's free to visit, though opening times seem to vary. Worth ringing ahead or checking the church noticeboard if you're planning a specific trip.

If you're based at Barleylands Campsite just over the way, this makes a gentle morning stroll before breakfast. Stuarts Wood is a bit further out but still manageable if you're exploring the wider area. The village itself is quiet - not much else going on, so treat it as a cultural pause rather than a destination in itself. Perfectly nice in decent weather, but there's not much shelter if it rains.
