St Mary, Lastingham

The crypt at St Mary in Lastingham stops you dead in your tracks. You descend into a proper Anglo-Saxon chamber - all low stone arches and that particular cold that only medieval underground spaces manage - and suddenly you're standing in something built around 1080. It's genuinely remarkable, and worth the trip from York just for this alone.

The church itself sits in a quiet village a few miles south of Pickering, unremarkable from the outside but packed with history inside. Beyond the crypt, there's a Norman chancel with decent carved capitals if you're into that sort of thing, and the nave's been mucked about with plenty of times but retains enough character to make an hour's wander worthwhile. The village is properly rural - the kind of place where you hear birdsong and not much else.

It's free to get in, and you can usually access it during daylight hours, though it's worth checking locally if you're planning a specific trip. Kids with any interest in archaeology or old buildings will find it engaging for a decent stretch; those just after a quick look round can be done in twenty minutes.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Cliff Farm Holidays or Yorkshire Burrows are both close by - it makes a sensible afternoon detour, especially combined with walking the surrounding moorland. On its own it's not quite enough to plan a day around, but paired with the Ryedale countryside and perhaps a visit to Pickering itself, you've got something solid.
