St Martin’s Plain

The Canterbury area holds some proper understated countryside, and St Martin's Plain is one of those places where the walking is genuinely good without any fuss. It's a nature reserve that rewards you for showing up - open grassland, proper views across the Kent landscape, and the kind of quiet you don't get near the city.

Walkers will find this worth a morning or afternoon. The terrain is straightforward, which suits families with older kids, though younger ones might find it a bit samey if you're just after an hour's entertainment. Birdwatchers actually get something here - depending on season, you'll spot skylarks, lapwings, and various other species drawn to the open ground. Spring and early summer are when it comes alive.

I'd allow two hours if you're properly exploring. Bring binoculars if you're into that sort of thing. Free access is typical for Kent reserves, but check locally as this one's a bit off the beaten track.

Stay at Daleacres Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, just under five miles away and rated well by caravanners, and you've got a solid base for exploring the area. New Beach Holiday Park is similarly close if you prefer a busier setup. The plain sits well within striking distance of Canterbury itself, so you're not isolated - but you could spend a lazy afternoon here and feel like you've actually been somewhere.
