St Martin`s Church

The church sits quietly on the edge of Bicester, a solid Norman structure that doesn't shout about itself but rewards a proper look. St Martin's has that particular feel of centuries pressing down - the kind of place where you can run your hand along stonework that's been touched by people for nearly a thousand years.

Inside, the space opens up surprisingly. High ceilings, decent medieval work if you know what you're looking at, and the sort of stillness that makes you actually notice the light coming through the windows. There's no gift shop, no organised tours, no faffing about - just a church doing what churches do.

It's genuinely worth stopping for if you're camping or caravanning at any of the parks round here - Greenhill Leisure Park is practically on the doorstep at three miles, and Weston Caravan and Campsite not much further. You'll spend maybe forty minutes looking round properly, less if you're just passing through. Free entry (as far as we could tell), though opening hours weren't posted clearly when we visited, so check locally before you make the trip.

Historically minded visitors will get more from it than kids hunting for thrills, if we're honest. But there's something about old parish churches that grounds you in a place - they're anchors. Bicester itself has grown into a proper town round this quiet corner, which makes St Martin's feel all the more like stepping back.
