St Mark's Church

The churchyard sits quiet and proper at the heart of Winscombe, with St Mark's rising up in all its medieval glory. Stone walls, a solid tower, and the kind of peaceful churchyard where you can actually hear yourself think - proper Somerset, this.

Inside, it's the usual Church of England setup: pews, a chancel, monuments to long-dead locals. Nothing flashy, but that's rather the point. The stonework has that authentic worn look of a building that's been doing the same job for centuries, and if you're into ecclesiastical architecture or local history, there's enough detail to spend a good half-hour poking around.

Really, St Mark's works best if you're already in Winscombe for something else - a walk, lunch, visiting one of the nearby holiday parks. Warren Farm Holiday Centre and Diamond Farm are both close by, and both decent bases for exploring North Somerset. The church itself won't take long - twenty minutes, maybe thirty if you're thorough - but it's the sort of place that feels right to visit when you're in the area, not something you'd specifically drive out of your way for.

Free to enter, as these places usually are. Go on a weekday morning if you want genuine quiet, and do check the door isn't locked when you arrive - small churches can be temperamental about visiting hours.
