St Luke, Haverigg

You'll find St Luke tucked away in Haverigg, a small village just outside Millom on the Cumbrian coast. It's a modest stone church that doesn't shout about itself, but that's rather the point - this is the kind of place locals know and visitors stumble upon by accident.

The church itself is Victorian, built in the 1800s, and has that solid, no-nonsense quality you get with many rural Cumbrian churches. Inside, it's calm and straightforward - proper country church atmosphere without the grandeur you'd find in cathedral towns. The graveyard's worth a wander too; there's something about old churchyards that makes you slow down.

This works well if you're staying at Harbour Lights Campsite just down the road and fancy a quiet walk with a bit of structure to it. It's not a destination in itself - you won't spend hours here - but as part of a morning ramble around the village before heading to the coastal paths nearby, it fits nicely. Millom's close enough if you need a proper coffee or lunch after.

Best visited midweek if you want genuine solitude. The church sits on the edge of the village, so you get a sense of the Cumbrian landscape without the effort of a proper hike. Worth twenty minutes of your time if you're in the area, though don't expect the historical drama of grander churches inland.
