St Lawrence's Church

The honey-coloured stone church sits right in the heart of Bourton-on-the-Water, hard to miss if you're wandering through the village. St Lawrence's is a proper medieval affair - mostly 12th century - with that solid, no-nonsense feel you get from Cotswolds churches. Inside, there's decent stained glass and some decent monuments if you're into that sort of thing, though it's not going to blow your mind if you've seen a few of these already.

It's the location that makes it worthwhile. The church sits bang in the middle of one of the Cotswolds' most popular villages, so you can easily combine a visit with a stroll along the water and a pint at one of the local pubs. If you're staying at Cotswolds Meadow Glamping - literally a tenth of a mile away - you could pop in for ten minutes without it eating into your day. History buffs might linger longer, but for most people, twenty minutes covers it.

The churchyard itself is pleasant enough for a wander, though it gets crowded during peak season when Bourton fills up with day-trippers. Admission appears free, though it's worth checking the website before you visit as opening hours aren't always reliable. If you've got kids in tow, they'll probably get bored quickly unless they're the type who engage with old buildings. Families camped at the Caravan and Motorhome Club site upstream might make it part of a longer village walk, but don't plan your holiday around it.
