St Lawrence's Church, Castle Rising

The church sits in the middle of Castle Rising village, impossible to miss with its soaring Norman tower cutting through the Norfolk flatlands. St Lawrence's is properly medieval - built in the 12th century, with that distinctive round tower you don't see everywhere. Inside, there's enough carved stonework and old detail to keep history types occupied for a good half hour, though it's not so vast that you'll feel obligated to spend an afternoon here.

What makes it worth the stop is the raw age of the thing. The tower's solid enough that you can feel how seriously the Normans took their church building. The interior has that particular smell of old stone and time that no amount of restoration quite removes. Kids will probably want to leave within twenty minutes unless they're genuinely into medieval architecture.

It's free to visit and sits very near Castle Rising itself - if you're spending time exploring the castle grounds, the church is literally a short walk away. Sandringham is close by as well, so it works as a half-day loop if you're mixing castle visits with easier pursuits. The local holiday parks - Pinecones and Happy Valley both within five miles - make decent bases if you're planning a Norfolk break with a bit of history thrown in. Open access is generally reliable for village churches, though it's worth checking ahead in winter months. Allow thirty to forty minutes unless you're genuinely absorbed in the details.
