The Arboretum

Walking through The Arboretum near Sandringham feels like stepping into someone's carefully curated forest dream. Mature trees tower overhead - oaks, pines, and specimen plantings that span decades - creating that deep, quiet atmosphere you only find in proper woodland collections. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think, which is rare enough these days.

This is woodland in its most intentional form: not wild, but thoughtfully managed. You're moving through layers of planting that tell a story about what grows well in Norfolk's sandy soil. For tree enthusiasts, it's genuinely fascinating. For families with restless kids, though, a couple of hours is probably the ceiling before someone starts asking when you're leaving. There's no playgrounds or visitor centre drama here - just trees and paths.

The real draw is combining it with a base at one of the nearby caravan parks. Pinecones or the Sandringham Club site are close enough for a morning wander before heading to the coast, and it breaks up a week of beach and seaside attractions nicely. If you're staying at Happy Valley or Parkdean over at Heacham, it's worth the short drive for a quieter interlude.

Best visited autumn or spring when you can actually move through the understory without being eaten alive. Summer gets a bit gloomy and damp. Go early in the day - the light's better and you'll have it more or less to yourself.
