St Lawrence, Brundish

You won't stumble across St Lawrence by accident. This 14th-century church sits in the heart of Brundish, a proper sleepy Suffolk village east of Halesworth, and it's the kind of place that rewards curious walkers and church enthusiasts in equal measure.

The building itself is solid, unpretentious Suffolk flintwork with a round tower that's older than the church proper - Saxon, probably, though nobody's entirely sure. Inside, there's genuine medieval glass in the windows, which is rarer than you'd think, and the woodwork has that honest, slightly worn quality of a church that's been doing its job for 600 years without fussing about it.

This is genuinely for people who get excited about old churches. Families with restless kids will manage fifteen minutes, tops. The village has no shops, no cafés, and precious little else to do once you've had a proper look around. But if you're the type to spend a morning tracing church architecture across Suffolk, or you've got serious history interests, it's well worth the detour from Halesworth.

It's free to visit - just the usual courtesy of turning the handle quietly. There's no set opening hours as far as anyone can tell; the church simply exists there, open when it's open. Pair it with a stay at The Croft Campsite or Savage Glamping nearby, both excellent bases for exploring this quieter corner of Suffolk. Allow thirty minutes, maybe longer if you're really into it. Go on a clear day if you can - the light through those medieval windows matters.
