St Kenelm's Church

You'll find this little 12th-century church tucked away in the Cotswolds countryside, a short drive south of Cirencester. The building itself is modest - stone-built, genuinely old, with that particular smell of centuries that only proper churches have. Inside, there's a decent Norman font and some interesting wall monuments, but honestly, what draws people here is the connection to St Kenelm himself, a Saxon martyr whose legend looms larger than the church walls.

The setting is the real draw. It's peaceful in that way that makes you actually hear birdsong again, and the surrounding fields feel properly remote despite being minutes from town. Worth a wander if you're staying at one of the nearby campsites - Cirencester Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is four miles away, and there's the excellent Tobacconist Farm Campsite a bit further out if you want something quieter.

Plan on thirty minutes maximum unless you're genuinely into Saxon history or ecclesiastical architecture. Free admission, though it can be locked outside standard hours - worth checking locally before you make the trip. The walk to the church through the lanes is pleasant enough on a dry day, but muddy in winter. Fits well into a broader Cotswolds exploration, particularly if you're based near Cirencester and want to break up the usual market-town routine with something genuinely low-key.
