St Julian's Church Wellow

The church sits quiet and unassuming in the village of Wellow, about eight miles south of Bath, but step through its Norman doorway and you're back in the 12th century. St Julian's is a proper working parish church, not a museum piece, which means you'll find real character rather than velvet ropes and interpretation boards.

What strikes you first is the simplicity. The nave is intimate, the stone worn smooth by centuries of worshippers. There's a Victorian restoration evident in places, but it doesn't overwhelm the medieval bones. The font is Norman, the arcade has real presence, and if you're into ecclesiastical architecture, the details reward proper looking - carved capitals, the shape of the windows, the way light falls across old stone.

This is one for walkers and history types rather than thrill-seekers. You'll spend twenty minutes here, maybe thirty if you're the sort who reads every brass plaque. It's free to visit, and genuinely peaceful on a weekday afternoon.

Wellow itself is a walking village - you could easily combine St Julian's with a ramble through the countryside, particularly if you're based at Widbrook Barns or Glamping on the Hill, both within six miles. The church makes a natural stop on a longer Somerset loop rather than a destination in itself, but that's rather the point. No crowds, no entrance fee, just a medieval church doing what it's been doing for eight hundred years.
