St Joseph's Catholic Church

The red sandstone facade of St Joseph's stops you dead when you round the corner in Invergordon. It's a proper Victorian Catholic church, built when the Highlands were a whisper away from the Industrial Revolution, and it's still doing its job today - serving the local parish with quiet dignity.

Inside, the light falls through stained glass onto wooden pews that have held generations of worshippers. It's not vast or ornate, but there's something genuinely moving about Scottish Catholic churches of this era. They tend to feel lived-in rather than theatrical. The craftsmanship is solid, unpretentious.

You're looking at perhaps 20 minutes of proper viewing time here - it's a working church, not a museum, so respect that. Go when services aren't on, and you'll have the space mostly to yourself. The real value is as a pit stop during a walk around Invergordon, or if you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots like Newmore Highland Pods or Delny Glamping and fancying a cultural breather between outdoor activities.

It won't grab your kids for hours, and it's not a destination in itself. But if you're based locally for a few days - perhaps combining it with walks along the Firth and villages further south - it's worth the ten-minute detour to understand how the Highlands maintained their Catholic identity through difficult centuries.
