Averon River Park

The Averon River winds through a proper slice of Highland landscape just outside Invergordon, where moorland meets water in a way that feels genuinely remote despite being minutes from civilisation. Walking along the riverbank here you get the full sweep of what makes this corner of Scotland special - open vistas, birch woodland, and if you're lucky, osprey and golden eagle overhead.

It's a nature reserve rather than a manicured park, so go in with the right expectations. There are no facilities, no café, no visitor centre. What you get instead is space to move, good sightings of woodland birds, and river pools that are properly beautiful in late afternoon light. The walk itself is manageable rather than punishing - nothing that'll leave you knackered, but enough distance to feel like you've actually been somewhere.

This works best for walkers and birdwatchers. Families with young kids might find the lack of defined paths a bit frustrating, and there's genuinely not enough to occupy you for a full day on its own. But as part of a broader Highland break, staying at one of the nearby parks like Newmore Highland Pods or Blackrock Caravan Park, it's well worth the detour. Pair it with a walk to a higher viewpoint or a visit to nearby Cromarty, and you've got yourself a solid afternoon.

Visit in spring or early summer when the river runs properly and the light hangs around longer. The midges can be fierce later in the season.
