The reserve sits just outside Hassocks, a modest pocket of woodland and meadow that rewards a quiet afternoon more than it demands one. You'll find yourself walking through native trees with the South Downs ridgeline visible on clearer days, which is exactly the sort of thing that makes a Sussex nature reserve worth your time.

It's the kind of place where you notice things slowly. Birdsong, the way light filters through the canopy, the occasional flash of a muntjac deer if you're lucky and stay patient. Not dramatic, but proper restorative. The paths are straightforward enough for families with younger children, though there's nothing here that will hold a teenager's attention for long. Serious walkers heading from Hassocks towards the Downs might incorporate it as a gentle warm-up rather than a destination in itself.

Don't expect visitor facilities or facilities of any kind really - this is a working nature reserve, not a honey-pot attraction. Allow an hour or so to do it properly without rushing. Free access, which is how these places ought to be.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Blackberry Wood or Downsview Park are close enough - it makes a decent morning outing before heading further into the Downs proper.
