St. John the Evangelist, Church & Priory

The ruins of St. John the Evangelist sit just outside York, a proper medieval church that's seen better days but no less worth a visit for that. What remains is enough to understand the scale of the place - soaring stone walls, fragments of the priory buildings scattered about, and the sort of quiet that makes you actually want to look properly at things. You're walking through eight centuries of English religious life here, and the bones of it are still evident even in ruin.

Children lose interest faster, though scrambling over fallen stones has its appeal.
