St John the Baptist, Parish Church

The church sits just off the main drag in Kidderminster, a proper medieval structure that's been doing its job for centuries. St John the Baptist is one of those places that creeps up on you - you walk past half a dozen times before you actually step inside and realise what you're looking at.

Inside, there's genuine medieval stonework and some decent stained glass that catches the light properly on a clear day. The nave's straightforward and unfussy, which is refreshing after some of the over-restored churches you find dotted about. If you're into ecclesiastical architecture or just enjoy a quiet moment away from the shopping centre bustle, it's worth twenty minutes of your time.

This works best for anyone with even a passing interest in church history - architecture students, retired types on a touring holiday, families with patient kids. It's free to visit, which helps. Allow half an hour max unless you're really deep into medieval masonry.

If you're staying at Lodge Coppice Holiday Park just down the road, it's an easy walk into town and back. Pair it with a wander round the town centre's older bits and you've got yourself a decent morning. Don't expect it to eat up hours though - it's a solid little church, but it's not Kidderminster's biggest draw. Go for the authenticity, not the spectacle.
