St. John Baptist Cirencester

The soaring tower of St. John Baptist dominates Cirencester's market square, impossible to miss as you wander through the town centre. This is one of England's finest Perpendicular churches, built largely between the 14th and 15th centuries when the wool trade was making the Cotswolds seriously wealthy. Step inside and you'll find yourself in a vast, light-filled space with an ornate fan-vaulted ceiling that takes your breath away - the craftsmanship is genuinely stunning.

What makes it special isn't just the architecture. The stained glass windows tell stories, the monuments scattered around feel genuinely historical rather than museum-like, and there's a real sense of standing in a space where centuries of Cirencester life have unfolded. The church is free to wander around, though donation boxes make it clear they're always grateful for support.

Histoy enthusiasts will spend a good hour in here. Families with younger kids might get restless after twenty minutes unless they're into spotting gargoyles and climbing tower stairs (worth checking if the tower's open). Allow half an hour minimum if you're just passing through.

It's perfectly positioned if you're basing yourself at Cirencester Park Caravan Club or Mayfield Park - both within easy reach of town. Hoburne Cotswold, slightly further out, also makes a good base. The church sits at the heart of Cirencester's excellent high street, so you can combine a visit with proper lunch, decent shops, and the Roman amphitheatre nearby. On a quiet afternoon mid-week, it feels almost peaceful.
