St James the Great Church

The church sits on a rise above Trewethern, a solid medieval building that's been watching over the village for centuries. St James the Great isn't showy - no grand cathedral theatrics here - but it's the real deal if you're after authentic Cornish church architecture without the tourist crowds.

Inside, there's proper medieval stonework and the kind of quiet that makes you actually hear yourself think. The churchyard itself is lovely for a wander, with old headstones worn smooth by time and weather. It's the sort of place where you can spend twenty minutes or two hours depending on whether you're the type who reads every inscription.

Works well as a stop on a country walk rather than a destination in itself. If you're staying at St Minver Holiday Park just down the road, it's an easy detour worth the leg-stretch. Similarly decent if you're based at Porthilly Beach Holiday Park and want a bit of inland culture between beach days. The village itself is quiet - no cafés or facilities immediately nearby, so come prepared.

Best visited mid-week if you want the place entirely to yourself. The light through the windows is nicest in late morning, though that's hardly a scientific observation. Families with young children might find it peaceful rather than engaging, but history types and church enthusiasts will appreciate the genuine medieval work. Free to enter, naturally.
