St. James' Church

The Church of St James in Lampeter is one of those Welsh parish churches that rewards a quiet morning visit, particularly if you're camping nearby. Built in the 15th century, it's a proper example of Perpendicular Gothic - solid stone work, decent stained glass, and the kind of peaceful interior that makes you actually want to sit down for ten minutes.

What strikes you walking in is how much character it has without being showy about it. The nave's straightforward and the woodwork's been kept well. You get a real sense of centuries of worship here, which some will find moving and others will simply find restful. Worth allowing twenty minutes if you're thorough, ten if you're just passing through.

This works best as part of a longer ramble around Lampeter itself - the town's small enough that you can combine a church visit with a walk along the river or a look at the university buildings without it feeling rushed. If you're staying at Canvas & Campfires or Go Eco Glamping just outside town, it's an easy walk in. Even Cambrian Mountains Glamping isn't far enough to make it awkward.

Free entry, naturally, and no fixed opening hours that I could pin down - just turn up during daylight and expect it to be open, which it usually is. Not a destination in itself, but genuinely worth the detour if you're exploring West Wales properly rather than just passing through.
