St Ives Park

Walk into St Ives Park and you're immediately struck by how much wetland sits right on the edge of town. This nature reserve is a proper bit of Cambridgeshire - reedy channels, open water, and the kind of birdlife that makes binoculars suddenly feel essential rather than pretentious.

It's a straightforward spot: walking trails wind through the reserve, following paths that take you past reed beds and observation areas. You'll spot herons, grebes, and if you're lucky, something rarer. The pace is gentle. Most people spend an hour or two here, maybe longer if you're genuinely into ornithology or just need some quiet time away from the town centre.

Families with younger kids will manage the easier routes fine, though don't expect thrills - this is botanical interest rather than adventure playground territory. Walkers heading out from St Ives can easily incorporate the park into a morning or afternoon jaunt. Serious birdwatchers should check tide times and seasonal migrations before planning a visit.

The park works particularly well as a break during a longer Cambridgeshire park holiday. Cuckoo Fen Campsite is just 3.7 miles away, as are Long Island Lake and Roseberry Tourist Park nearby - all decent bases if you want to combine wetland walks with exploring the broader Ouse valley area. It's understated, free to access, and honestly quite peaceful. Not Instagram-famous, which is rather the point.
