St Hydroc's Church, Lanhydrock

The church sits quiet and grey in the Cornish countryside, its tower rising from a scatter of gravestones that go back centuries. St Hydroc's is one of those places that rewards a small detour - a working parish church with medieval bones and the sort of atmosphere that makes you actually want to sit in a pew for five minutes.

What you're looking at is largely 15th century, though the dedication to St Hydroc suggests something far older. The interior is straightforward and honest - no over-restoration, no tourist gloss. The carved bench ends are worth a proper look, and the roof timbers have that satisfying age to them. It's the kind of church where you can almost hear what Sunday mornings sounded like 400 years ago.

Lanhydrock itself is the real draw if you're staying in the area - the National Trust estate and its grand house pull in most visitors. St Hydroc's works brilliantly as a quieter counterpoint. Park up near Maudlin and walk over; it takes twenty minutes and costs nothing. The nearby caravan parks like Eden Valley and Mena Farm are close enough that families could easily slot this into a morning before heading to the bigger attractions.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from it. Kids will probably spend ten minutes inside before wanting to move on, which is fair enough - it's a church, not a playground. Go in daylight so you can actually see the detail. No admission charge, as far as we could tell, though a donation box sits by the door. Worth the walk.
