St Gregory's Church, Sudbury

The tower of St Gregory's rises above Sudbury's market town centre like a proper medieval sentinel, and once you're inside, you understand why locals still make the effort. It's a 15th-century parish church - all soaring arches and light flooding through tall windows - and the craftsmanship stops you in your tracks. The wooden roof alone is worth the visit, intricately carved and impossibly old.

You'll spend a solid thirty minutes here if you're taking it seriously, poking around the brasses and reading the wall plaques. History buffs will find plenty to absorb - the church tells you most of Sudbury's story if you know where to look. Families with younger kids might find it quieter than some attractions, but there's something about the scale of the place that tends to quiet everyone down anyway.

It's free to wander in during daylight hours, which is standard for Essex parish churches. No visitor centre, no facilities, just the building itself. That's rather the point. If you're staying at Cranfield Retreat or Lake View Lodges - both within easy driving distance - you could easily combine this with a proper walk around Sudbury's Georgian streets and along the River Stour. The Huts at Woodthorpes is another close option if you're after glamping. The church itself makes for a grounding hour between park time and whatever else the town offers.
