St Gregory's Church

The churchyard at St Gregory's sits quietly on the edge of Hungerford, surrounded by the sort of yew trees that have probably stood there since medieval times. It's a proper working parish church, not a museum piece, which means you'll find real life happening here alongside the history.

What strikes you first is the Norman stonework - the nave dates back to the 12th century, and you can actually feel the age of it. The chancel was rebuilt later, and there's stained glass that catches the light just right on a decent day. If you're into architectural details, the carved capitals and the general solidity of the place reward a closer look. For a quick visit with kids, the churchyard itself is peaceful enough, though the building's interior appeal depends entirely on whether medieval masonry gets you excited.

This works well as a gentle stop if you're staying at Lorne Hill Farm, just a couple of miles away. The walk into Hungerford proper takes you past proper countryside, so you could combine it with a proper tea in town. It's the sort of place that takes twenty minutes to look around properly, maybe longer if you're the type to read every memorial.
