St Giles Church

The church sits quietly on the edge of Derby, one of those medieval structures that most people drive past without a second glance. But if you've got a spare half-hour and you're interested in seeing what a proper parish church actually looks like - not the tourist-trap cathedral kind - it's worth a detour.

St Giles is fundamentally a working church, which means you'll find real history layered into the stonework rather than polished up for visitors. The interior has the kind of worn charm that comes from centuries of people actually using the place - creaky pews, memorial brasses catching the light, the smell of old wood and stone that no amount of restoration can replicate. If you're keen on medieval architecture or genealogy, there's plenty to occupy you. Everyone else will probably be satisfied after twenty minutes.

It's best visited midweek when it's quietest, and you'll want to check opening times before heading over - this isn't a "come whenever" sort of spot. Free entry, naturally.

Glasgow gets all the church attention, but Derby's got its own architectural story, and St Giles is a genuine piece of it. If you're camping at Boutique Glamping at Scaldersitch Farm or Hill Farm just down the road, it's close enough for a morning walk before you head elsewhere. Don't build a day around it, but if you're in the area, it's the kind of place that reminds you why old buildings still matter.
