St Germains Loch

A flat, open stretch of water about five miles south of Stirling, St Germains Loch is the sort of place you'd stumble upon if you were exploring the Lowlands properly rather than rushing between A-roads. The loch itself isn't dramatic - no towering peaks reflecting in the water, no moody Scottish mist rolling in. What you get instead is something genuinely useful: a decent spot for a walk, a bit of birdwatching if you're into that, and enough space to actually breathe without tripping over other tourists.

The footpath around the loch takes you a couple of hours at a leisurely pace. It's flat and straightforward, which means families with younger kids won't be cursing you halfway around. The water's calm, the banks are accessible in places, and on a decent day it's rather pleasant. On a drizzly Tuesday afternoon in October, mind you, it's mainly just you and the water birds.

Free to visit, obviously. There's limited parking information available, so arrive early if you're coming at weekends. If you're staying at The WHW Hotel & Campsite just down the road, it's an easy morning activity before heading to Stirling Castle or exploring the wider park area. Worth an hour of your time if you're in the region, but don't rearrange your entire trip around it. There's better scenery in the Trossachs thirty minutes north, but this does the job if you want something low-key and local.
