St. George's Church, Rollesby

The squat flint tower of St. George's rises from Rollesby village like something that's simply always been there, which it more or less has. This is a proper Norfolk church - the kind with medieval bones, a round tower (distinctive to East Anglia), and that particular quietness you only get in village churches miles from anywhere urgent.

Inside, there's decent woodwork and the sort of accumulated detail that rewards a slow wander. The round tower itself is the real draw for architecture types, and if you're into medieval Norfolk churches, you'll find yourself comparing it mentally to others in the Broads area. It's not flashy. The churchyard's pleasant enough, though nothing to plan a day around.

This works best as a brief stop if you're already in the area, perhaps after a walk around Hickling Broad or on the way between coastal holiday parks. Richardson's Hemsby Beach and Parkdean California Cliffs are both within a few miles, so it's the sort of thing you might do on a lazy afternoon when the beach has worn everyone out.

Admission appears to be free, and you can usually just walk in during daylight hours. Allow twenty minutes if you're genuinely interested in medieval churches, less if you're just paying respects to the architecture. Families with non-architecture-focused kids will find it a five-minute diversion at best. The real value's in the quiet - proper contrast to the busier holiday park atmosphere just down the road.
