St Eugene Catholic Church, Glenock

The drive into Glenock takes you through proper Tyrone countryside - all rolling fields and stone walls - before St Eugene's appears, whitewashed and dignified beside the road. It's a working Catholic church, not a ruin, which means you get the real thing: candles burning, the smell of old wood and incense, that particular quiet you only find in active places of worship.

The building itself dates back to the 1820s and has the kind of straightforward beauty that Irish rural churches do so well. There's no fuss to it - simple lines, a bell tower you can't miss, and that whitewash that seems to glow in certain light. Inside, the Victorian glass and dark timber keep things intimate. It's the sort of place where twenty minutes is enough unless you're genuinely into church architecture, in which case you'll want longer to study the details.

This works best if you're already in the area around Omagh. It's not a destination in itself - you won't travel from Dublin for it - but if you're staying somewhere like Gortin Glen Glamping, it's five miles away and worth a quiet stop. Walkers and history types will appreciate the setting; families with restless kids probably won't linger. There's no visitor centre, no café, no interpretation panels. Just a church doing what it's done for two centuries.

Go on a weekday morning if you can. You'll likely have it to yourself, and the light through the windows is better then.
