St Etheldreda's Church

The church sits quietly on Watchet's high street, easy to walk past if you're not looking. St Etheldreda's is a proper medieval building - the sort of place where you can actually feel the weight of centuries in the stonework. Inside, it's surprisingly spacious, with decent stained glass and that particular smell of old stone and furniture polish that never quite leaves churches of this age.

It's the kind of stop that works well if you're already in Watchet rather than a destination in itself. History enthusiasts will appreciate the medieval architecture and the chance to poke around a genuine working parish church. It won't keep you occupied for hours - twenty minutes is realistic - but if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Haven Doniford Bay or Warren Bay, it's a pleasant fifteen-minute walk from the seafront.

Watchet itself is worth a proper wander. The harbour's interesting, the coastal path beckons, and there are decent enough cafes for a coffee stop. The church fits naturally into a morning's exploration rather than dominating it.

Admission appears to be free, though opening hours aren't widely advertised - best to check locally or try your luck during normal daylight hours. If you're touring the Somerset coast between Exmouth and the Welsh border, this is a legitimate pause point, but don't rearrange your whole trip around it.
